This vintage Darkrai Pokémon card just sold for over $100,000

After Pitch Black brought the nightmare Pokémon back into the eclipsing spotlight, a vintage Pokémon card of the ‘mon has now sold for $120,000

Darkrai is a classic, but not to the extent of a Kanto starter or a Pikachu, or a Charizard. The nightmare-delivering Legendary Pokémon is a cool force of nature, but it’s not one you’ll find typically a fan-favorite. Yes, I know I love Giratina, but it’s not about me. Now, despite Pitch Black cooking down, a vintage Darkrai Pokémon card has just sold for $120,000 in auction.

It’s not unusual for recent Pokémon sets to cause older cards with the same ‘mon surge in price. If anything, it is a pattern, and Pokémon TCG’s fourth set this year—Pitch Black—is no different. While Mega Darkrai ex SIRs initially sold for around $600, and the same Darkrai #BW73 promo I’m discussing today sold for $30,000 on eBay. But, somehow five months later, that amount has only increased.

The 2013 card was a promo included with the Team Plasma box, which as a handy note, retailed for around $20. As far as Black Star promos go, Darkrai #BW73 is a pretty neat card, but what makes the value so high is the fact that there are so few PSA 10 copies.

The same card, in the same grade as the eBay listing a few months back, has now sold for $120,000 in an auction with Fanatics. Although, it’s much cheaper than the $2.5 million bid on the card close to the end of auction. For reference, another copy sold for $90,000 on the same marketplace in an auction on the 21st September, 2026—just two weeks ago.

It’s not unusual to see Pokémon cards fetch a large sum. If anything, that’s the new normal these days. But seeing such increasing amounts in a few months, especially after the initial hype of a new expansion has died down, is unusual. In fact, I don’t think I’ve seen this before (feel free to correct me, my email is in the contact section).

Although, I bet the people who bought a PSA 10 copy of this card a few years back don’t think they’re in a nightmare. If anything, they’re living the dream.
