Pokémon Pitch Black’s Mega Darkrai cards are already hitting $600

Mega Darkrai ex is looking to be Pitch Black’s top chase, and sales of the two Pokémon cards are proving it.

After newer Pokémon such as Greninja taking centre stage in Chaos Rising and Perfect Order, it was almost inevitable that a set featuring a classic fan favourite would receive plenty of hype. Pokémon Pitch Black is just over a month away, but Japan’s Abyss Eye is already available. And, unsurprisingly, the two Mega Darkrai ex Pokémon cards are going for upwards of $600 on eBay.

Taking the top spot in my Pokémon Pitch Black chase cards list, Mega Darkrai ex might be one of the most metal Pokémon TCG cards in history. The SIR delivers an almost fully black and brooding take on the legendary, while the Mega Hyper Rare of the Dark-type is easily one of the best looking all-gold cards yet.

While Greninja has been a fan favourite for over a decade, nothing beats a classic, and for punk-loving emos like me, nothing is more impressive than a nightmare-inducing mythical. Even though Darkrai’s Mega Evolution does take the design from a shadowy, looming design to a more giant, cloud-like creature, it’s still a stunning Pokémon for collectors like me.

Of course, as I and many other collectors expected, Darkrai is quite popular. While we have to wait for the Pokémon set to launch in the West, Japan’s Abyss Eye gives us a taste of what to expect for the hype in late July. The answer? Well, Darkrai is selling like Daschbuns.

On eBay, the Mega Hyper Rare version is selling for around $600, while the Mega Darkrai ex SIR is sitting around the cheaper - but still expensive - $400 mark. Typically, Japanese prices will drop when the English version releases, but it’s an indication of what to expect when Pitch Black releases, and it looks like I’ll need to save some cash. Or, at least, hope I can get my pre-orders in.
