The spooky season is upon us, and if you’re a fan of all things scary (or scarily cute), here are the best Halloween Pokémon cards to collect.

In a franchise full of adorable ghouls and Ghost-types, there’s no shortage of Pokémon cards that offer some kid-friendly scares. If you’re like me and prefer to make themed Pokémon TCG collections, this is a great opportunity to treat yourself to some Halloween cards — and don’t worry, there are no tricks here. Boo! Okay, no more now.

I’ve been looking around for the best Pokémon TCG cards to celebrate the Halloween festivities, so strap yourself in, grab your favourite costume, and, with your decorations all up, here are all of the spookiest cards to pick up this year (in no particular order). And make sure to grab some Pokémon card sleeves to keep them safe!

A Pikachu SM162 Pokémon card

Pikachu SM162

Kicking off the list with more adorable than scary, this Pikachu card sees the Electric-type gasping in front of a Mimikyu. It’s creepy in the cutest way, highlighting the Pokémon’s fear, and while it’s not a reflection (mirrors are scary), it works as a little treat for Halloween.

The Japanese Sabrina’s Gengar #094 Pokémon card

When I made this list, I knew I would focus on one card per Pokémon (or else it would be massive with Ghost-types). Sabrina’s Gengar #094 has an apparition-like appearance, with Gengar walking around a graveyard. Does it get any spookier than that? I don’t think so.

An Alakazam #2 Pokémon card

Alakazam #2

Less Halloween vibes and more just eerie, this card has Alakazam staring the collector down with an almost evil look on its face and in its posture. Genuinely terrifying, and knowing that Alakazam spent years out of the spotlight due to legal troubles makes one of the only cards in existence all the more terrifying.

A Bewear #079 Pokémon card

Bewear #079

Who designed this? At first, it’s adorable, with the sun shining in the background, and nothing in sunlight can be spooky, right? Well, Bewear #079 is spooky. The cute ‘mon looms over the viewer in a way that can be perceived as either caring or dread-inducing, depending on who you ask. Personally, I fall into the latter group.

A Froslass #174 Pokémon card

Froslass #174

Stalking into a home, Froslass looks frightening on its own, with an art design that looks like a killer walking into a home from a horror movie. Even worse is the description, which reads: “It freezes its prey by blowing its -58 degree Fahrenheit breath. It is said to then secretly display its prey.” Who asked for this, The Pokémon Company? Why did you make that description?

A Mimikyu #58 Pokémon card

Mimikyu #58

How can you have a best Halloween cards list and not include Mimikyu? The puppet-like take on Pikachu blends horror and cuteness in a way that only Pokémon can, and the description lends itself to cryptic horror, with the real appearance of the Pokémon unknown. Apparently, a scholar saw what it really looked like and was overwhelmed by terror, dying from the shock. Happy Halloween, kids!

So, whether you’re going trick-or-treating with your kids or you’re watching a scary movie marathon — or both, both are fine — hopefully you can do so with a binder full of spooky Pokémon cards.
