This jumbo Pikachu Pokémon card just sold for $2,800 in a PSA 10
The Pikachu at the Museum Pokémon card from the Natural History Museum collaboration has just had its first PSA 10 sale, selling for almost $3,000.
Exclusive promo cards and value are intricately woven together when it comes to the Pokémon TCG. The Chinese Mew ex, the Van Gogh Pikachu, and more are limited in print, so they typically become valuable Pokémon cards for those reasons alone. However, jumbo cards are usually left out from that equation, and yet, here’s a Pikachu at the Museum card selling for almost $3,000.
While I love a good jumbo card, the consensus in the Pokémon TCG community is that they’re great display pieces, but they’re unruly. You can’t fit them in typical binders, they’re not legal for competitive play, and for those focused on value, well, the aforementioned issues can cause problems. Thankfully, they’re usually limited to collection products, and not official releases in Pokémon sets.
So, I definitely had Pikachu’s shocked face (not the meme, the scream promo) when I saw that this promo sold for a small fortune. In a recent eBay sale, Pikachu at the Museum sold for $2,850 (£2,122) in a PSA 10, which appears to be the first publicly recorded sale. It’s only one of 18 in that grade, and there’s only 153 graded copies in general.
Why has it sold for that much? Well, it’s easy to point at the current hype market and blame it, but it’s also the fact that jumbo Pokémon cards are ridiculously hard to grade. They’re vulnerable to edge wear, scratches, bending, surface damage, and other print issues that affect their chances at getting a Gem Mint. A jumbo card getting a high grade from one of the best Pokémon grading services isn’t a small feat.
I don’t expect jumbo cards to start soaring in value suddenly, thankfully. This seems to be a fairly rare case combining a limited Pikachu promo, with a hard-to-get grade and the generally overvalued Pokémon market. Of course, I could be wrong, and maybe we will see jumbo cards tripling in value overnight. Although, I really doubt it - Pikachu at the Museum is currently around £11, according to Collectr, and that’s a huge drop from the £100+ it initially had at release.
