Pokémon Delta Reign should add Pokémon TCG Pocket’s new system
Pokémon TCG Pocket is getting a fresh Rayquaza-led update this week, and its best mechanic should come to physical Pokémon cards.
If you’re anything like me, chances are you’ve been frustrated with a lack of getting any Special Illustration Rare Pokémon cards in certain packs. Some older expansions, like Evolving Skies, are absolutely brutal in terms of pull rates, and while many may seem easier, the randomness of packs is both a blessing and a curse. However, Pokémon TCG Pocket’s upcoming update has a mechanic that I’d prefer to have in physical packs.
Pokémon TCG Pocket is already fair compared to the physical Pokémon sets, at least in my opinion. Sure, the output is higher and the amount of cards per pack is smaller, but unless you actively pay money, the packs are free. I’ve also got a lot more SIR equivalents in my virtual binder compared to my physical. It’s a shame I can’t have some of the Pocket cards in the real world.
In a new update, after undisclosed conditions are fulfilled, the next time a booster pack is opened from the same expansion, players are guaranteed a 4-diamond card or higher. Whether it’s hugely beneficial or just a small positive is yet to be seen, as it releases alongside Ruler of the Skies on 29th July, but it needs to be added to the physical TCG.

I’m not asking for an SIR guaranteed in every pack - I understand the thrill of the chase is something that keeps things exciting. But an SIR guaranteed in every booster box, dropping the rate down to effectively 1 in 36, would be a great step in the right direction. I know that 4-diamond cards are equivalent to a standard ex, but the difference is that the physical cards are £150 / $150 boxes. I think we deserve a guaranteed hit.
With the Pokémon 30th Celebration pre-orders underway, alongside smaller packs and a technical pity system (every pack guarantees a different Pikachu), it would be great to add the mechanic with Delta Reign. The Rayquaza-led physical set ties well with Ruler of the Skies, so bringing the same new mechanic would be the perfect opportunity.
Having a pity system wouldn’t just help collectors either - it could have a huge impact on the ridiculous market prices. The biggest SIRs of every expansion seem to dominate in recent pricing, leading sealed to also blast off (again) in price. That guarantee could have a significant effect on third-party listings, making future expansions easier to buy for collectors. There’s a clear case of causation - the lack of a major SIR in Perfect Order and Chaos Rising has seen booster boxes drop closer to retail.
Hey, I can dream.
