I hope you have a Gimmighoul around. While Pokémon cards from the latest expansion have seen huge drops across the board following release (which is a great sign, may I add), it’s not all good news. Despite only 12 cards being over $75, an entire set of Pokémon 30th Celebration would set you back just north of £47,500 / $63,800 (I know that’s not the figure in the headline, stay with me).
This is an unusual situation, since most Pokémon 30th Celebration chase cards are dropping in price as more packs are opened. The expansion’s excellent pull rates, some of the best I’ve seen in the Pokémon TCG recently, are making its SIRs more accessible.
The most expensive SIR, Mew ex #152, is currently valued at just $200 on Collectr. That’s relatively low compared to the biggest chases in other Pokémon sets, but the elusive Mew RGB trio more than makes up for it.
According to Collectr, Green Mew is worth $28,000, Blue Mew is $20,000, and Red Mew is around $13,500. That’s $61,500 between the three cards alone, accounting for roughly 96% of the set’s estimated value. If you’re still waiting for your Pokémon 30th Celebration pre-orders like I am, chances are you’re hoping to pull one of these rather than having to buy them outright.
However, these prices may not stay accurate for long. Even now, eBay listings for the Mew trio are coming down sharply. Red Mew is appearing at around $6,000, while Green Mew is closer to $4,000.
Blue Mew was harder to find at comparable prices in the listings I checked. For the sake of comparison, let’s estimate it at $5,000, bringing the trio to around $15,000. That would put the full set at approximately $17,300, rather than the $63,800 suggested by Collectr’s initial valuations.
Even at that revised estimate, Pokémon 30th Celebration would still be one of the most expensive Pokémon sets of the Mega Evolution era to complete. For comparison, a full Ascended Heroes set is valued at around $5,316. That set has 19 cards worth more than $50, with Pikachu ex, Gengar ex, and Dragonite ex leading the SIRs at $959, $870, and $568, respectively.
That’s a lot of numbers, so I’ll give you a second to breathe. Done? Okay, good.
Of course, these figures are a little skewed. Pokémon 30th Celebration has only just launched, and its products are being released in stages over the coming months. Prices could change considerably as more packs reach collectors. The excellent pull rates also mean that the supply of chase cards could grow quickly, which may put further pressure on prices.
Even taking into account some price drops though, it’s surprising to see three cards take up the bulk of the value—especially cards I’ve seen called ‘ugly’ online. This is a case of rarity taking most of the heavy lifting, and since there’s so few coming up on eBay, that rarity seems to be a big factor. If you’re looking to just get the SIRs and Futuristic Rares, you’ll be looking at a fairly cheap expansion, all things considered.
